How to Start an Epoxy Flooring Business in Iowa (Without Quitting Your Job First)

Who this is for

You have a truck, some tools and weekends. You have heard garage floors go for $2,000 and up. You want to know if that number is real and what it takes to get there.

Short answer: the number is real in the Des Moines market. Getting there takes one skill, one set of equipment you can rent at first, and one paying customer. Here is the order to do it in.

Step 1: Learn the floor before you buy anything

Most failed epoxy businesses fail on floor number three, not floor number one. The floor peels, the customer calls, and the contractor has no idea why. The cause is almost always surface prep or moisture.

Learn the whole system first: moisture testing, grinding, repair, primer, base coat, broadcast, topcoat. A hands-on class where you finish a real floor is the fastest way. Reading about it is not the same as mixing Part A and Part B with a 30 minute pot life ticking.

Step 2: Price your first floor before you have a customer

Take a standard 2-car garage, about 450 square feet.

  • Materials for a full-flake polyaspartic system: roughly $600 to $750
  • Grinder and vacuum rental for a day: $150 to $250
  • Your time: about 14 to 18 hours over a weekend

Typical installed price in central Iowa: $2,000 to $3,200. That leaves room for your labor, a helper, and profit on your very first job. Use the free pricing calculator on our site to run your own numbers.

Step 3: Get one paying floor, then buy equipment

Rent the grinder for floors one and two. Once you have two deposits in hand, buy. A 20 inch planetary grinder and a HEPA vacuum will run $9,000 to $12,000 new, and there is equipment financing. Buying before you have customers is how people end up with a grinder in the garage and no business.

Step 4: Set up the boring stuff

  • An LLC and a business bank account
  • General liability insurance, usually $60 to $120 a month for a one-person operation
  • A simple contract with the moisture and cure-time language in it
  • Before-and-after photos of every floor you finish

Step 5: Fill the calendar

Your first ten customers are people you already know and their neighbors. Offer a fair price, do clean work, and ask every one of them for a Google review and a yard sign for the weekend. Facebook groups for Ankeny, Waukee, Urbandale and West Des Moines are where garage floor jobs get posted.

FAQ

Do I need a license to install epoxy floors in Iowa?

Iowa does not require a state contractor license for coating work. You do need to register as a contractor with Iowa Workforce Development if you earn more than $2,000 a year from construction work, and most customers will expect insurance.

How long does it take to learn?

Three days of hands-on training covers the full system. Most students book their first paid floor within a month.

Can I do this on weekends only?

Yes. A garage floor is a two-day job. Many of our students run epoxy as a weekend business for their first year.
